Is modern Christianity against in vitro fertilisation (IVF)? If so, why?

I've had some people tell me that their religion is against IVF as this is artificial life and therefore against God's will. But isn't it a wonderful scientific breakthrough for infertile couples? I know some LOVELY people who would make excellent parents, but have had trouble conceiving. Why would God in his infinite wisdom and benevolence make a couple infertile AND THEN forbid them from using IVF when the opportunity came along? Doesn't seem so fair to me.
