What would a defrost heater do?

If in reference to a refrigerator, it defrosts the ice on the evaporator when it builds up. After the ice melts, the system goes back into its normal refrigeration mode until the evaporator needs defrosted again, initiated by either time, coil temperature or a combination of both.
